Thank you guys for all the recommendation. I'm glad to see there are many free alternatives.

To whom it may help apparently I overlooked that you can effectively override display options for specific elements and selection on a scene under the display option marker tab There you can set display options for Scene Geometry, selected Scene geometry, current model geometry, etc. Is not the same but it works for my objective.

Hi I've been wondering about doing a small video tutorial and was wondering if anyone can recommend a good screen capturing soft for doing it. Hopefully not very expensive.

In light of no other way I will start doing the same…but I may put a request feature for this one after all is so useful for optimizing the scene when you are focusing in one single mesh.

Is there a way to make environment light only visible for reflections but not refractions?
I am a bit confuse as the refraction mask in objects only uses geo as inputs not lights.

Try putting a principal shader in the wall with some reflection and play with the roughness. The material does not seem particularly difficult. And don't forget the lights…there are at least two lights in that scene… and area light to the right with some soft shadow and a spotlight to the left(could be a directiona light).
PS: I actually notice there is a third subtle area light on the left.

I am almost ashamed to ask this but I cannot seem to find how to override display options in houdini.
Basically I want to display a few object as wireframe in the viewport.
This is , a very common task in any other 3D apps I worked with but I cannot seem to find a way to do it.

pezetkoOops, just unlocked them….I uploaded it late one night.
Why locked then?
It will probably take a bit until Orbolt update it…
PS: the reason why I locked it in the first place was merely because I will prefer to receive feedback and then update the asset so everyone enjoy the new free tool. But you make a good point, however if you find ways to improve it please share it here. On the top of my head I am thinking in adding a scale along the curve beside the current scale… that could be interesting.

Based on the fabulous class by entagma I decided to quickly put together a splineWrap deformer expanding on the concept they presented. Basically I added Control on Spline begin, Spline End, Offset, and a ramp control to scale along the geometry. I also made it so you can build your geometry anywhere (not the center) and in any orthogonal axis. You can find it here if you want:

if you are interested in the Entagma video, I really recommend it:

thank you very much @glassman3d….
I solve it with atoi here:
int num_name = atoi (strip (@name,“name”));
@Cd = set (rand (num_name),rand (num_name),rand (num_name));

How would I transform a string attribute into a float to use in random.
I am trying to use the name attribute produce by the assemble SOP which is string to randomly give color to each primitive.
but rand (@name) will not work… I assume because it requires a float.
Any ideas?

Christopher Rgirlsmagzine
By storing seam information in attributes before the refinement step, you are able to change the amount of panel refinement without having to respecify the seams. Because of the way Houdini automatically interpolates attributes, points added along the seams because of the refinement will become part of the seam.
I've been following this thread and I don't understand girlsmagzine ?

Hi,
I just really need some basic collision that behaves a bit like a cloth…so even a FEM sim will do for me. I just thought in using the occasion to learn about cloths in houdini.
Thanks for the links to the tutorials and the funny video . They will do just fine, I haven't found anything in PluralSight yet, so I guess that indeed the material is pretty old and needs a revisit at somepoint.

This is kind of a double question post.
Anyone can guide me to a good introduction cloth tutorial?
I have been trying to find something without much success, except for an old cloth masterclass on houdini 12.
Which I understand may be a bit dated since the changes on H15 right? Any help will be appreciated.
Which takes me to my second question/request?
Is it time for a new cloth master class?

pusatfloat mass = 1 / area; @mass = mass;
Thanks pusat….I know is simple but it was confusing the fact I couldn't put the computation in the same line (I am a bit OCD).

Ok,
I think I answer my own question but please correct me if I am wrong.
The problem with the above code was that ptnum and numpt are integers and will not translate properly to the float value I included. The following however do just fine:
f@grad = float (@ptnum)/ (@numpt-1);

Hi, a very newbie question I am sure.
But while defining a variable I wanted to do a simple computation and then I found out as the manual says:
So my question is How then you DO computations? I am a bit confused:
Basically I ended up doing this:
f@grad = @ptnum;
@grad /= @numpt-1;
instead of what could have simply been written like this:
f@grad = @ptnum/(@numpt-1);
This is a very simple example but what if I need a very complex computation, what do I use then?

You cannot do any computation on the right side of the equals sign (. The following are syntax errors:
float @mass = 1 / area; // Error
vector @up = set(0, 1, 0); // Error

This is just an idea, I don't know if it will help you in your case. Instead of the cookie I have been experimenting using a curve to create a lot of points in the region I want my wall to be cut and feed those point to the voronoi. That way you control the destruction shape with a curve,and you can skip the cookie.

Well pointVop is in effect VEX in graphical environment so a lot of the tutorials will just cover a specific function or area inside VOPs so you will probably be hard to find a specific point vop tutorial except in the documentation. Nonetheless here is a link that will probably help:
