Back to the “freeze modelling” subject…
In XSI when you don't freeze the modelling, it takes a lot of RAM then XSI slows down a lot. Is it the same in Hou?

Heya SreckoM thanks for your input. Actually you are answering to my first question about the red lines, which is already resolved. Now I'm talking about the blue lines that marks existing edges. I would need to create a short video showing what I'm talking about.
What app should I use to capture a video?

Is it possible to set hard edge in a subdivided object, like in Soft [virtuverse.wikia.com]?
I saw there is an hard edge option in the remesher tool, but I don't need to remesh now, just a subdivided object with some hard edges.
Thanks,
G

Hi again
Second subject in this thread: the “moving” blue line while using Polysplit.
Ryuku, have you understood better what does it mean? I've read your conversation with Matthias and watched the attached pics. But I am still stucked ops:
To sum up the question : when one uses Polysplit and starts by a point, the point is highlighted but also an edge connecting this point is highlighted. If I move the mouse, another connected edge is Highlighted. Some goes for the “destination” point. Why?

hey Doudini!!!
Yes! Normals is what I forgot to check! So I selected some primitive faces and used a reverse op on them and voilà! No problem anymore!!
Thanks a lot!
BTW, what do you mean by “removing normals”?
Cheers and see ya soon,
G

Hi! I kind of finished a model piece and want to subdivide it.
So I added a subdivide SOP, chose “matra compatible catmull clark”, Depth 1.
As you can see in the enclosed picture, there a many problems: holes appear, some faces are not divided, edges are not extended across faces, OGL artifacts appear.
It seems that my base mesh is corrupted. But I have checked the points around the problematic area. I select points and check in the Geometry spreadsheet if they are double points: I didn't find any problematic points.
So what should I check next?
Thanks
G

Hello Mc Nistor, thanks for your opinion.
That's what I was doing before: always going back to XSI when modelling was too rough in Houdini.
However some days ago I thought: if I don't force myself to model in Houdini, I'll never get its workflow. I don't know how long I will last like that. Perhaps Houdini 15 will be my savior? 8)
It is true that a lot of tools and fluency is missing from Houdini's modelling tools. And Polyknit is probably the worst hair puller one. Sometimes the edges will keep crossing themselves in a new quad, and I simply don't get how to get out of that, despite a lot of tries!
Werner , The video you posted is nice. It is great to see a bunch of new polygon faces created over a lot of points, and see all these points connect automatically through edges.
However:
- The mesh does not seem correct. Many times the guy creates new planar polygone faces that are connected to closed boxes (the first time he does that is at 00:16). Do Houdini polygon modelling tools care for valid meshes?
- For individual faces, it can get very complicated, see what I said above.

Thanks MartybNz
It's weird because a few days ago, when I was using polysplit, I kind of remember points got duplicated on the new edge's intersection with the existing geometry. Now I tried again and I don't have this problem. So perhaps I mixed this tool up with another (edge subdivide?) or perhaps I tweaked a setting that got rid of the double points… ? :?

Thanks a lot RyuKu and Matthias for the insightful conversation 8)
This thread has a lot of topics so let's take them one by one. Let's start by the “red lines” subject.
What Matthias said that clears up but I just want to make sure I understand correctly. That's why I created an image that I post here. My question is inside this image!!
Thanks !

Thanks Werner. I may be using one of this 3 tools for future modelling operations.
However I would be interested in knowing how to do it with the “native” Fuse OP.
Also, is there any improvement on this in H15, without using some third party tools?
See you,
G

Thanks a lot Jordi for taking the time to answer me!! I'll experiment all these advices and dig more in your docs!!
With your extensive experience of Softimage and Houdini, what do you think of Houdini's way to handle shared properties?
Cheers mate

I think I found the cause of the problem: snap to points wasn't enabled.
In Softimage, even if snap to points is disabled, creating new polygon faces would snap the point of the new face to the surrounding faces.

Well after using it for some minutes I think it is not fully satisfactory… The problem is that I'm currently trying to detect double points that would need a Fuse OP. And when I select one of these double points, both numbers are superimposed. I would prefer the points numbers to be separated.
Here is a screenshot of Softimage, showing a double point selected. the points ID numbers are clearly readable.

Hey guys. perhaps I'm crazy but now I'm trying to use Houdini for modelling as a replacement for Softimage. ops:
I'm having a hard time using Polyknit in H14. When I create a new polygon face, all points surrounding the new face get duplicated. WHY? I tried to check and uncheck each Polyknit options but always get the same result.
Should I wait for H15 or… go back to Soft for modelling?

Hi all,
When I select one point or face or edge, is it possible to view the ID number of the selected component?
Thanks,
