Just a reminder: If you want to report a bug to us, posting a message in these forums is NOT the way to do it….your issue is unlikely to be logged, tracked, or fixed if all you've done is post a forum message about it. Please use one of the 3 options mentioned at the start of this thread. Thanks!

I printed out the entire manual twice - one for work, one for home. Then I printed a third ‘mobile’ edition that I keep in my backpack.
Then I went out to the forest and cut down a few extra trees and peed on 'em.

I will add a couple comments to this thread …
“and i thinkthe 3rd reason is that company really doesn't care about nonprofessional users.”
The Apprentice and Apprentice HD editions of Houdini are a testament to our commitment to non-professional users. We have allowed unprecedented access to our software for hobbyists and enthusiasts. As you can see amazing work is possible by non-professionals:

Another key point is that Houdini's strengths are in its visual effects toolset and procedural workflow. When we have image contests, the results tend to take advantage of our procedural nature and try to bring something new to the table:

The CG Society projects are primarily modeling/rendering images of characters/sets therefore Z-brush plus whichever renderer will do fine. Even though Mantra can do the same work, artists tend to go with what they know and learn Houdini to add effects to animated projects.
With a better uber-shader and more modeling/shading tutorials we could start to break out of this although our focus will be primarily effects for now because that is what our customers (both pro and non-pro) rely on us for.
On the other hand our procedural workflow has advantages in all areas of the CG pipeline and customers are starting to explore these other uses such as Asylum's character effect work on Terminator Salvation:

Just wanted to let everyone know that future releases of Houdini will not include a Win 32 VC7 build, but they WILL still include a Win 32 VC8 build. That's the one most win 32 users care about anyhoo according to our survey and download data, as it's the one that has FBX support. (The win 32 VC7 build does not). We just wanted to give you guys a heads up about this. Our understanding is that it will affect very few, if any, of our customers.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Render query

Hey - that's the first bug I logged when I started here.
It's an old video and hasn't been updated since they changed the shader they used for the spoon in the video.
i.e. Don't worry about it. You haven't done anything wrong. The video is just out of date.
The shader is reflecting the blackness of your black background.

Whenever I've hit that problem, it's because the mesh of one or both of my objects isn't dense enough. Sometimes increasing the resolution on them can solve that problem of the cloth falling through the object.

Houdini Lounge » Which build of Houdini are you using?
- chrism

In an effort to continue to support users on various platforms for future releases we'd like to get an idea of which builds of Houdini people are typically installing, using, or compiling plugins for on a regular basis. Just to assure you, we have no intention of getting rid of older builds that people are still using in production.
Please feel free to respond to in this poll thread with any additional info you believe is relevant. e.g. How long you plan to keep compiling against a certain build or what platforms you would like to use in the future.
Also, if you use more than one of these builds regularly, let us know in this thread.
Thanks!
