According to the houdini documention:
http://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini/nodes/obj/geo [www.sidefx.com]
For correct matte shading of volumes:
Add the vm_matteshader property to the object.
Create a Volume Matte shader.
Set the density on this shader to match the density on the geometry shader.
Assign this shader to vm_matteshader.
Does any one have an example of a volume matte shader?
I want to hold out particle renders with a volume hold out matte.
i.e. where the density of the volume = 1, the particles are not visible in RGB and A.
Where the density of the volume = 0, the particles are visible in RGB and A.
And the particles are correspondingly partially visible for all values between 0 and 1.
I'm trying to make particles partially visible behind a translucent object.
Any pointers would be much appreciated.
thanks

I'm trying to select geometry that consists of a point cloud being read with a file node, but I can't select it in the Scene View.
The selectable flag is enabled on the geometry node.
What am I missing?

Some time ago, houdini used to show an indication when a scene is changed. e.g. Nuke adds “modified” to the title bar when you change something in the loaded file.
Does anyone know of a plugin, startup script, or a widget that will warn you that you have made a change to a loaded scene?
thanks

This is very helpful, much thanks.
My second related question was: I want to flood fill the thigh geometry with weights of 1 from the thigh bone. And I want to flood fill the lower leg/shin geometry with weights of 1 from the shin bone. How do I do this?
thanks again.

I'm learning how to use the autorig, and have a question about the Capture Layer Paint node, inside the /obj/deform_rig/skin.
When you right mouse click with the Capture Layer Paint selected, a pop up menu appears. See attached. The menus and functions don't appear to be documented. Could someone explain what each one does?

Hi Michael,
this is invaluable for me to study, as it gives me a better understanding of the rigging process.
In the mean time I also watched some more of this tutorial:
https://cmivfx.com/store/533-houdini+rigging+animation+fundamentals [cmivfx.com]
Which made me realise I had my mouse button functions set incorrectly.
I know now how to smooth weights, using the autorig workflow.
Much thanks!

Thanks. Please find attached the lower leg. i.e. calf, ankle and boot, from the space suit. The calf and the boot are meant to be a rigid material. Only the ribbed geometry for the angle is meant to expand and collapse, like a bellows, to allow the boot to be rotated at the ankle.
I'd like to know how to paint and blend the weights to achieve the above.
thanks

I'm using the houdini autorig to rig the space suit in this work-in-progress render:
https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/distant-galaxy.com/maelstrom2/CliffInSuitOnFreightCapsule/M2.CliffInSuitOnCap.Jun21.E.HD.jpg [s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com]
The autorig is working overall, but I have a question about blending weights at the joints. e.g. the calf bone should be capturing all the shin geometry as a rigid piece, the toe bone should be capturing the boot as a rigid piece. Which they are. However, I want the ankle bone to capture the flexible rubber bellows geometry at the ankle, such that it compresses and expands as the ankle rotates.
How do I blend the weights between the calf, ankle, and toe bone such that I achieve the desired blending in the suit ankle geometry?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
thanks

Hi,
I am attempting to rig a spacesuit for my inde project. I'm trying to use the bipedautorig:
http://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini15.0/character/biped [sidefx.com]
When I try to swap the low resolution geometry with a high resolution version, the capture layer paint node fails:
http://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini15.0/nodes/sop/capturelayerpaint [sidefx.com]
i suspect this is due to the capture layer paint node is referencing points that are specific to the low res version of the model.
Which means it seems I would need to re-paint the capture weights for the high res version.
Is there a way to to rig a biped humanoid in such a way you can swap low res and high res geometry, without having to re-paint blend weights?
thanks

I'm trying to download the latest version of houdini.
However, when I go to the page where you are supposed to select the OS, it doesn't allow me to select the version.
i.e. the dropdown sub menu for the OS version is blank.
When I try to download, it tells me I need to select the version.
I'm stuck.
I'm using Mac OS 10.11.3
I tried three different browsers and have the same problem; chrome, safari, and firefox.
Anyone else experiencing this problem?
thanks

I'm trying to launch my houdini indie renders in the AWS cloud, but they are failing with the errors at the end of this message:
I'm using Mac OS 10.10.3, and Houdini Inde 14.0.444.
In the HQueue Render node/Cloud/Machine Type, I had selected:
1 EC2 Compute Units, 1.7GB, 160GB HDD.
Please find attached a very simple test scene file of a cube moving from left to right.
Also find attached a text file of the output errors.
Note that in the error log, it appears to be using Houdini 14.0.248 on the AWS side, as apposed to the latest 14.0.444 build.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
thanks

Hi Rob,
I'm glad to hear you have had some success in the cloud.
For some reason, the machine type of:
55 EC2 Compute Units, 30.0GB RAM, 2 x 160GB SSD
Caused the error:
Unable to launch image ami-88ab92cd as the product code 5D6864EE is not supported for the specified region, instance type and operating system combination. Please contact the vendor for more information.
The work around for me was to select the next Machine Type in the list.
Which turned out to be:
26 EC2 Compute Units, 68.4GB RAM, 2 x 840GB HDD
And it worked well, as it was sufficiently powerful enough to handle the increased resolution of the flip fluid sim.
thanks

I'm trying to launch a flip fluid sim/render in the AWS cloud.
I can get a low res version to work using the default Machine Type:
20 EC2 Compute Units, 7.0GB RAM, 4 x 420GB HDD
When I increase the resolution of the fluid sim, the renders take too long.
When I try to change the machine type to the next most powerful:
55 EC2 Compute Units, 30.0GB RAM, 2 x 160GB SSD
It fails. See log below for details.
This is happening with Cloud Region set to Use Detected, which defaults to US West (North California)
Has anyone else run into this problem? If so, is there a work around?
Thanks
