Maybe launching the UI is adding an OTL_SCAN_PATH where the command line is not. What OS?

Sorry - just saw you mentioned win registry. We long ago abandoned using Windows on render nodes, it is so much easier to work with LX on nodes, and with the use of Variables I am sure it is not difficult to setup a Houdini cross OS render farm. I did it for Mental Ray and Arnold before - Houdini should be a breeze.

What OS are you trying to do this on? We use LX here and have setup a boot script that we can use to install Houdini on our farm nodes. This makes it very easy to update, or you can easily setup a server install and link a folder on each node. Quite a few ways to skin this cat.
