Hi, is there a way to take the used in a color sop and make it the material color?

Sure, on a Mantra surface that is exactly what the Use Point Color check box is for. To get the “true” color you will have to change the default Mantra color from off-white to pure-white. This will cause the incoming Cd point attributes to be multiplied by 1.0 in the r,g and b channels.
So make sure when you add a color node at the SOP level that is is applied to the points and not primitives. Also make sure you don't clobber the @Cd attribute latter on in the modeling process. To be sure place the color at the end of the network.
Remember to actually add a Mantra surface material to the object as well.
