Why is the subnet operator fixed to 4 inputs? (emulating a layers-like workflow)

I'm trying to find a way to emulate a layer like workflow in Houdini and I came across the subnet operator. It seemed rather odd to me that this software which has a dynamic operator input on things like the merge sop and in general a programmable and hacky interface to its inner workings would hard code the number of inputs and will not allow you to delete them or add new ones. It doesn't only seem to produce clutter, but also against what I perceive as the philosophy behind Houdini. Am I missing something regarding the subnet sop? Did anyone else found another way to emulate the layers workflow?
