Hi! all

Now I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this thread topic so i sorry if this wasn't.

As for the topic, a month back a friend of mine told me about Houdini and even said that he was using dell laptop (dont recall the specs but he did mention it wasn't a “gaming” laptop by any means) to run and create the projects on houdini. Believing that (and what reason did i have not to..) i went on to downloading the apprentice non-commercial v17.0.416 on my laptop which is:

MSI GP72 6QF with intel i7-6700HQ @ 2.60GHz which can be throttled upto 3.00GHz (albeit i don't know how to do that and dont wanna go into bio and try coz im afraid i might mess something up..), has 16GB RAM, 64-bit OS and processor (2500MHz speed) with GTX960M Nvidia, Intel(R) HD Graphics 530, 4 core/8 logical processors, win10, 1920x1080p reso, shader 5.1, opengl 4.5, opencl 2.1 and directx runtime and hardware-supported version both being 12.0

I was tasked with making a project from my teacher of a simple render so i made a cylinder with smoke coming off of it and for the sake of submission i posted a 1/10 resolution image render and a video of the same but then i wanted to render a 720p resolution of the same and it's taken 11 hours now and only reached frame 39!!…and my cpu is always at 95%-100%…

So, after all that storytelling, what can i do to reduce the load it's taking on my cpu and how can i reduce the render time (coz moving forward i am going to have to make and render bigger project scenes for the course which sould be full on landscape scenes like forest and such..and im not seeing how will i be able to do those when such a simple one is taking over 12 hours…

KINDLY PLEASE HELP!!

Thank-you
