Extruding along curve problem

I have a grid pointing up(or a face of cube) and I make a ark shape curve (inverted U) and then I polyExtrude and get C shaped extrusion(to by adding divisions and distance)…. The C shape introduces artifact(see how chipped it look at both ends) that I don't want, and it can't be fixed by rotating the cube or the curve… I am not sure what I am doing wrong…

Even if I get the curve directions to match the extrusion direction(i.e both are C-shaped), it is still extruding sideways on the face rather than doing one of the 2 usually expected results:
- start normal-wise and following the curve relatively
- extuding towards and follow on top of the actual curve….

How I do it:
1) Create curve
2) Enter it (diselect stuff)
3) Create grid in the nodeEditor using the search menu(or whatever it is called the drag and drop linking editor)
4) disselect stuff
5) Create poly extrude in the nodeEditor
6) Link them
7) Make the curve NURBS and the extrusion along 2nd input curve
8) fix grid size to not get garbled up due to immense size 3d object
