I'm a Karma beginner and I use default settings to render.
I've set my Houdini to use ACES:
My viewport is color corrected and has an orange light:
I then render and process it in tops:
My final sRGB render JPG has a much more saturated red-ish light now:
I've also tried starting my arguments with --colorconfig /path/to/my/houdini/config.ociowith no success. I'm not exactly sure which part of my process is wrong. I suspect it could be wrong arguments for hoiiotool, but maybe I need to adjust my Karma render settings for ACES? I will appreciate any thoughts on this.
I'm attaching a hip file if anyone's interested. It has the OpenImageIO top, as well as an alternative COPs node that works as expected. I'm definitely doing something wrong with the OpenImageIO part.
I've just discovered what was wrong. In OCIO Settings, there are individual settings for file formats. By default, EXR is treated as Linear (even with global ACEScg) Changing it to ACEScg makes OpenImageIO top produce correct results when processing an EXR render. I've got mixed feelings about this. On one hand it's logical, on another, the fact that a COPnet worked properly and only the OIIO top didn't, ended up being misleading for me. I'm still learning tops, but up to this point I thought Houdini simply boots up hoiiotool.exe and passes the input file path to it. Had no idea there's some color correction happening in between.
In Karma render settings, you can set ACEScg as the exr colorspace metadata. Maybe this will fix it for you? If i remember correctly the colospace metadata has the strongest opinion. Even over the file rules.
@Heileif You're right. I just tried rolling EXR mapping back to Linear, and setting the color space in Karma render settings and it works Thanks a lot!
