How to deal with non-manifold prims created by Mirror SOP?

For example, I have this grid:

Some of the squares are across the middle line. Now after a Mirror SOP:

The middle part is not automatically merged, even with Consolidate Seam enable.

A Fuse SOP makes things worse:

It fuses the points, but not the prims, and causes some leftover overlapping prims!

Is this really the expected behavior? What's the proper way to use Mirror SOP without ending with non-manifold geometry?

(I know in this specific example, we can put a Clean SOP to clean up the overlapping prims, but it's still very weird to me that Mirro and Fuse have this landmine behavior...)
