Hullo! The first time I start Houdini 21 after a computer restart it frequently takes a long time (5 - 10 minutes) to start. After the first time, though, it starts up quickly/normally. I've heard tell in forums that changing the license server to local will fix that, but I've not been able to find how to do that. Any pointers?

Hi,
This is something I was trying to do today, found out how eventually...
You will need to use the command line tools. When you open the launcher, use the little drop down menu on the Launch button, you'll find the tools there. Once in the command line window, type hserver -S localhost
Then hit the launch button for Houdini and you should see the dialog asking you to install your license or use sidefx.com, as you do on a fresh install.
Hope this helps!
