material applying issue with .USD geo

Hi!

I'm new to Houdini and I'm working with a .USD file.
For the life of me I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with applying materials to an asset.
I think, it may have something to do with the fact that the model is combined geo.
It has multiple pieces, but it's all one object.
I apply the materials but I don't see any changes in the viewport nor in a render.
I've used both materiallibrary node and assignmaterial node, together and by themselves.
I used a sublayer to import in the .USD file.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Hard to tell without a hip file, but try assigning to the geomsubsets of the mesh prims...

I'm not familiar with this.
That could be it!
Might you be able to explain further and/or share with me nodes I may use to help with this workflow?
Would you be able to recommend an video/tutorial/doc that could help me familiarize my self with this.
Again, I'm super green to Houdini.
