Hi there,

Anyone using RH9 with Houdini yet?

Should I stick with 7.1 or 7.2?

(trying to pull the SGI syringe out my arm …)

Stick with 7.3 if it's for production unless you *really* have to have something RH9-specific. You can get it to work, however, takes some envar settings plus seems to have some other issues. Fine if you're just fiddling.

I've found that 7.3 is best for production(once a small kernel upgrade for dual systems is installed) over 7.1/2 since it's a great balance between capability and compatibility. However if you're running either of those now without troubles then I'd apply the ain't broke/don't fix rule. 7.3 (or RH9 for that matter) isn't going to fundamentally add some new level of performance or speed.

Hurts a teensy bit at first but afterwards you'll feel a new man.

On the sysadm/user level you may be surprised how painless it is - of course there's differences, but the primary change category I would say is security. Most of my initial hair pulling was because Linux, by default, is far less trusting than Irix. Assuming you're safely behind a firewall, you'll probably want to start wiping much of that. But then, lecturing you on security is like Piglet lecturing Pooh on honey.
Otherwise, I recall being pleasantly surprised at how fast I could just get back to work, saying “oh - *that's* neat! A full featured compiler included! Oh, kewl! Look at all these free apps!”, etc. etc.

On the coding level, well, I guess you've already dipped your toes in there…

Yep, the free compiler, gee loooky there! That's yet another reason (out of a thousand) why I've got to switch platforms, SGI's development tools aren't getting any cheaper either …

On a side note, me being a Solaris admin/user as well, I took a look at the current Sun Micro offerings … *almost* as bad as SGI in regards to price/performance/features for a graphics workstation (I still think they have the best servers on the market though) … Makes me wonder who wouldn't move to Linux in this kind of climate.

Hi,

I've been looking around to buy RH7.3, but it appears to be not available anymore except via download from an ftp mirror site and I don't think it's supported anymore. Please correct me of I'm wrong.

Is it worth buying the “Red Hat Network” or “Red Hat Enterprise Network”, etc.?

Do you Linux folks buy directly from RH or through another outlet, say Amazon.com?

Support? We don't need no steenking support!

We just download the images here. The more “packaged”(and sometimes quite expensive) versions of RH seem to be more for the corporate database/webserver people. I've only ever downloaded iso images, and my support numbers are alt.os.linux, comp.os.linux, comp…

Especially I wouldn't buy the package regular version in the store - you're literally paying for the manual and CD, plus a pseudo-support that I've found doesn't really come in very handy for the line of work we do. The few times I've asked RH support questions, I tend to get “that doesn't work” or similar. I'm sure it's better value for their more typical, corporate customers, but I've found better support than I could possibly buy in the community.

Cheers,
