how can I get rid of it?

The red XYZ thing in the middle of the screen is called the Origin Gnomon, and it's quite usefull.
It lets you know where in the world space/object space you are.
You CAN turn it off by popping open the display options (press ‘d’ in the 3d viewport). Activate the Guides and Markers page, and find the option in the panel.
Turn off “Origin Gnomon”.
