How do you join / stitch anything together?

I am trying to join a curve to a nurbs surface and also to stitch to play around with it but can't seem to figure out how this works. So I have, for example a curve and a surface, both as geometry objects then when I go to join I don't see how I am supposed to select the thing to join it with. I have tried this also with cutting and pasting the second curve into the geometry object of the first but this doesn't seem to work either. It seems I am missing some aspect of this so if anyone can offer advice I would appreciate it.

edit: from looking at this a bit more it seems that you definitely have to be within a geometry object to use either of these but I just don't understand how you can effectively put 2 different pieces of geometry in here and join them, when I try to combine them and then go to do the join it doesn't seem to work.

Hey ,
Model your separate curves , create a new geometry object , dive inside and drop down 2 objects merge nodes and select the objects you want to bring in. Then you apply more operations to mege , move , what ever you want

Thanks for the response, I think I get how to do this.. but can this also be done with a nurbs surface and a curve or does it have to be just 2 curves? thanks
