Hi Guys,
I decided to have a go with the pryo lessons and get a bit deeper and better understanding of houdini. This is a newbie question but when I run houdini and working thru the lessons i find it is taking a long time to get a preview in the render window.
System Monitor is saying that I`m only using 1.2 gb of ram out of 6 that I have installed.
I`m I missing something and is there a variable path that i have to tell houdini to use more ram.
Using build 10.0.554 on ubuntu 9.10, 64 bit 0S.
Thanks in adance
Ian

i believe that this was discussed earlier, but i can't remember exactly where
are you refering to rendering?
it's not the point to use all your ram
for example if you are rendering simple sphere, there is no point of using 32GB RAM if it just need a few MB
the same for fluid sim, if the data needed for mantra to render that image are say 1GB then it will use only that 1GB
the actual speed of rendering is then dependent on your CPU speed
so as long as cpu usage is 100% it should be fine
there are however some Rendering Properties which help you tweak memory/speed ratio in some special cases like displacements
we better find that first post about this, i believe there are some more information about this even though i am not 100% sure
if you are referring to fluid sim, then you can increase Cache Memory parameter on DOP network to allow it to cache more frames to RAM for fast playback
there are also SOP cache, OBJ cache and COP cache in houdini properties which can help you customize your memory usage
