so, i've noticed that if i have a displacement shader on my geometry and use the viewport rendering op (the one you can make a selection in the actual viewport), it will have displacement bound *like* issues when rendered at the sop level.. but if i use the viewport render op at the obj level, it looks fine.
i have my displacement bound up and even when i just render to mplay, everything is fine.. only issues when doing viewport rendering at sop level..
(my test was a simple grid with a displacement shader created with the simple water vop.. tried all different settings in the viewport renderer…)
anyone else getting this? is it because it's not reaching the display bound param at the obj level yet? is there a workaround at all?
thanks,
dave

sorry, yea….. im using 6.1.208…
and actually i just found out something interesting.. it only seems to be a problem with older files.. the file that seems to be an issue was created in 6.0.304 and opened in 6.1.208 and doesn't like the viewport render at sop level, only obj (see pics below)…
but if i create a new hip in 6.1.208, and make a quick displacement, it works fine at both levels… and it seems that if i just copy the shader from the 6.0.304 file (opened in 6.1.208) to a brand new 6.1.208 file it works fine, so i guess that's my solution.
you were right, must of been an earlier bug and somehow it gets written in to the file itself and still causes a problem even when opened in a newer version..
thanks j.c.

Are these done with shaders shipped with Houdini or is this a custom shader
it's just a very simple shader done in vops by mixing the waves vop and some noise.. nothing special.. i was actually just showing another student here how to control things with audio by chops and so i made some cheap water displacement on a grid moving to the music…
If you rendered with the Mantra ROP into a framebuffer/file, does the same problem exist?
nope works fine when shooting off a render in to mplay or to a file..
Could this have been caused by the shader been embedded into the hip file…
don't know, but don't think so because if i open the file up and create a new displacement shader and use that one instead, same problem occurs.. and if i copy the old shader in to a new file, it fixes itself… but another thing is, if i resave the old 6.0.304 file in 6.1.208, it retains the problem..
maybe the file got corrupted…?
