Great masterclass guys, lots of info to take in. Any chance of a future tutorial about the PopFluid node used in the whitewater setup? Seems like there are lots of uses for it and would be good to know more about this great addition to H17!

Technical Discussion » PGFind workaround in grains

Hey all, working on a heavy sand project soon & have just noticed that the grains solver isn't using the accelerated pgfind VEX function as I was hoping so I did some investigations. Got quite a speed up from using it, but found this in the ‘get_neighbours’ node …
“// pgfind is faster, but fails if particles are too separated in OpenVDB 3.0”
Is there any work around for this at all, or a way to fallback to pcfind if pgfind fails at all?
Thanks
Dan

Hey, just had a look at your wrangle node & got it to work! Added backticks to the ch() command and changed your ‘Export Parameters’ back to the default ‘*’ value.
Also, remember that rand() only produces floats in range of 0-1, so need a lower threshold. Let me know if that fixes it …

Lol, substeps do help from experience, but doesn't completely solve the problem. I think it might be something to do with the velocity needing to push the flame around, but I guess more tests will have to be done!

Hey, I'm working on a fire sim in Pyro for a shot & need a fast burning flaming torch, that's being moved quite rapidly around. However, I'm having real trouble getting something to move at this speed or scale, and any movement (esp up & down) just puts the fire out!
Anyone know how to get this working pls? Also, I've tried the version on Orbolt but it's still not quite there, so if anyone has a scene they can share, that'd be great! Cheers …

Hey pyro experts!
After seeing the amazing Stalingrad reel, my present job has requested extra detail in the fire sims I'm working on! I'm simming at the highest res my machine can handle, which is pretty good, but anyone got experience of adding extra detail - ie noise or displacement - at render time?
Also, in regards to rest fields, I see the Main Road VFX guys seem to use some advected points system to generate a better result with less stretching. Any ideas how to do this?

Quick note - looks like we're going to have to restrict this session to 30 places as there's only limited space at Escape Studios. However, we will be meeting after the session for drinks, so it might still be worth coming along later on.
Also, if anyone has booked tickets and can't come, please let me know asap so I can re-allocate spaces! Thanks!

Hey Neil
Shame you can't make it, but am going to see if we can record it or get slides at least. See you at the next pub night perhaps!
