PolyExtrude: how to use localx / localz?

I thought localzcan control the direction of extrusion. But I can never get it to work. For example:



I've set localz. But it does... nothing? It doesn't affect how PolyExtrude works at all. I've checked the checkbox:

I stumbled across this one some time ago - I had the same question...

It only seems to work - as far as I could see - when using 'Transform Extruded Front' mode. That is: set the 'regular' extrusion distance to zero and use the Z translate in 'Front transform'.

I've never really got my head around why these two modes of operation need to exist so 'separately' TBH...
