Major Issues 9.1

A) I'm have some major hassles with 9.1, When creating an object i cannot see it, the only way to see an OGL shaded view of any objects or primitives, is by selecting “Geometry Select Mode” and then it only shows me one object.

If i create 3 spheres only one will show when Geometry Select Mode is used, when Object Select Mode, i just see the rotation and axis handles, no actual objects.

If i change of edit any properties, (size) i need to select Geometry Select Mode, Object Select Mode, and Geometry Select Mode again, just to see the object say a sphere change size.

How do i ensure that all my objects are interactive and all show in OGL,
this was never a problem in H9.

B) Also why do i have a message at the top of my screen.

“Update mode is Manual. View may be out of date.”

How to i make it automatic and where would the setting be to change it?

C) I just tried FBX Import, and got no actual geometry or cameras… (just some nodes) Is it actually working as yet?

Thanks for any advice on the subject.

Cannot edit previous post.

But i have fixed the main problem listed as Problem A)
I deleted all configs and preferences, and restarted and all objects are created as expected now (Phew!)

Also it doesn't mention about the manual update, so only the FBX issues…
And i will continue to try and see where the problem lies, with that.

I'm guessing all three of your problems actually stem from problem B. In the lower right corner of the Houdini window is a menu with the choices “Manual” (which your is set to), “Auto Update”, and “On Mouse Up”. Just change this menu to “Auto Update”, and I think all your problems will go away. I don't know how it got set to “Manual”… “Auto Update” is definitely the default…

By way of explanation, this setting lets you control how often Houdini “cooks” things. So suppose you have a a large complex model. You want to add a bunch of SOPs to the chain, but because the model is so large, it takes a long time to recalculate every time you change something in SOPs. You may switch the update mode to “Manual” so that you can do a bunch of SOP operations without having to wait for each one to cook. Once you think you have it right you can switch back to “Auto Update”, or hit the manual refresh button (just to the left of the “Manual” menu).

But unless you are working with very large complex scenes or simulations you are unlikely to ever want to switch out of “Auto Update” mode.

Post again if this doesn't also fix your other problems.

Doh!

Yeah i don't remember ever hitting that button, (I did a search through help) to try and find where it could be found, but search alas did not show anything when searching for “Auto Update or Manual Update”

But thank you for your reply. Yes indeed, when i click on manual update it does indeed cause the problems i mentioned. I will keep this checked off But it's also good to know that deleting the preferences, also clears issues such as this.

With FBX i think some of my issues are from my export, as Modo301 tends to work okay. I will continue to do some testing.

Many thanks for the reply, Houdini 9.1 is looking really good, and well done to SESI too. (Now all i need to do is give my Interface a bit of a darker look) I see there is 4 Color Schemes for Download: Any suggestions?

PS. I found a link on the SESI website yesterday mentioning external renders like Maxwell Render.. (I already own some licenses) I checked the Maxwell website, and it lead back to SideFX… Does anyone know where to or how to access Maxwell Render from H9.1

Because FBX is in the “early access” stage, it is still being actively developed, and changes to it are made quite often. In particular, there were some bug fixes made after the Gold version of 9.1 was shipped. You may want to try downloading Houdini 9.1.144 or later and see if that helps with FBX import.

Alternatively, if you could send me the offending FBX file, I could look at it and possibly see what's going wrong.

Assuming you are on XP platform, you have to contact developer of that plugin, because it is not directly developed by Next Limit, have a look at the exchange (no modifie Maxwell Toolkit), you can finde some more info there. And here is the contact info:
sidenimjay@gmail.com

PS. As far as I know it works under H9.0 only…
