Hey guys,

just heard about fabric and it seem to be a huge tool. The developers seem to see themselves at the top of content creation and content viewing tools wihtin the next years. All starting with the engine for getting familiar with the stuff.

What are you thinking compared to houdini? Don't want to start “this is better than that war”, but are you kind of vorriew they will take over the field soon or later?

Some ‘little’ things like full GPU acceleration for everything are phantastic on their own ..

Fabric will expand the market for asset creation.

It's a truism that someone somewhere is always concerned with some software taking over because some other software is getting x features; always remember Houdini doesn't stand still.

N.B. GPU acceleration isn't a panacea for everything. i.e. recently I was turning it off in NukeX on a Gtx980; using the CPU instead, as the PCI bus data transfer was too slow for 4K compositing.

The interesting thing is that the software hasn't got just a new feature, the software is a huge feature. Soon or later some people will will build an entire suit out of it. They already said that the first generations will be more for those who know how to code python for example.

Well, I'm quite new in the 3D world and even newer in Houdini. I'm a little afrait of investing years into this software when there's a ‘new star’ rising

Do you have a link to this software?

Guillaume Laforge ported it over to Houdini , pretty impressive

In this industry there's always a new star rising, but Fabric isn't an independant 3d software like Houdini, Maya, Modo etc; it needs to attach itself to 3d software. As I understand it can be thought of equivalent to the VEX/VOP in the SOP context from Houdini or ICE from Softimage, i.e. manipulation of 3d geometric data, that can be used across other software, perhaps similar to the Houdini Engine but without access to all the built-in fx tools of Houdini.

It's definitely a good thing™; the biggest draw card is that you should be able to deploy Fabric assets across multiple software with highly optimised compiled code.

Your Houdini skills should be transferable to Fabric with relative ease.
