Tracing Geometry from a direction

Hi,

i am trying to find a way to trace (create an outline) of a geometry from a direction.
so far i tried the ray sop with a dense circle surrounding the geo. but this fails on many features of more complex shapes.
i was thinking of maybe using the trace one but it requires either an image or a chop. not sure how i could use anything in a chop however. i would image i'd have to render with a pure white shader!? and then use the trace?

Probably you may find that VEX can be easier to do this.

You can slice the geometry using the Clip SOP and keep both sides, append a Group SOP for points before and after the clip, get the difference, convert this group to an edge group and then use a tool like this to turn your edges into a polygon curve:
