Future linux kernel support

Having read the announcement that future Houdini releases will not be supported on linux kernels below 2.6… I've upgraded one of my Debian Sarge (2.4.27-2-386) workstations to Debian Etch (2.6.18-4-686)… with a clean install.

Everything seems hunky-dory so far… X, remote mounts, rsh, etc.

My network license server (w2) is a workstation running debian (2.4 kernel), and h8.1.866 (linux_i686_gcc3.2).

The problem I'm having is that my upgraded workstation (w3) running houdini-8.1.866 (linux_i686_gcc3.4) can no longer get licenses from w2.

Running hscript gives me…

hscript version 8.1.866 (compiled on 02/03/07)
No licenses could be found to run this application
Please check for valid license server.

Running hkey gives me…

The license server on w2 does not
permit this machine to read licenses from it.

SESI_LMHOST is set to w2

I do not want to upgrade my main workstation/license server to etch until I know everything works fine on my “test” (w3) machine.

Any ideas what may be the problem?

I suspect a missing linux package or incorrect permissions with the clean install of etch.

One common problem with licensing on Linux is that an entry is added to /etc/hosts so that your hostname resolves to 127.0.0.1.

If you're using statically assigned IP addresses, you can replace 127.0.0.1 with your LAN ip address.

I believe this issue has been fixed in later versions of Houdini.

Hello Catlee,

Yes, that was the problem… thanks also to Jenny & Monika at SESI support.

The new linux install added “w3” (the local machine name) to the end of the first line in the /etc/hosts file.

127.0.0.1 localhost w3

Removing “w3” fixed the licensing problem.

Thanks all.
