Need USD help. Documentation doesn't help much.

Hello,

I am trying to learn how to create USD assets. I have a group of megascans (57 similar objects) and I want to turn them into one USD file to scatter them all over my scene.

I followed a lot of tutorials. Each one was following different processes for some reason and nothing worked because they were all on H18.5 and H19 and I am on H19.5, so I ended up following the documentation Intro to LOPs tutorial 1 [www.sidefx.com].

Well, so far I feel like the documentation needs updating because a few stuff are just not correct and I just can't make it work.

First of all, at Step 4, it says that I should create a Reference LOP node and then select the Reference Type ▸ Reference From Multi-input parameter option.

That option does not exist as shown in the image attached.

Second, at Step 7 it says create a Reference LOP node and at part 3 it says "in the Composition section, use the Reference File parameter to browse to your USD file and load it"

Again, that option does not exist.

I ended up using the File pattern parameter as shown in case it is the right one but the USD comes in without materials.

I followed the documentation to the letter (when the letter was correct anyway) and it hasn't worked.

Are there updated instructions or tutorials about how to create USDs with multiple variants on H19.5 or is it all broken?

I am also attaching my hip file.

Thank you.

Reference LOP got updated in 19.5 so what you see is reference::2.0
while it sounds like the tutorials you are following use previous Reference LOP

to be able to follow them you can easily switch to the previous one

easiest way is to enable Asset Definition Toolbar

which will appear above parameters in parameter pane
and then you can switch to previous version from there

Thank you! Didn't know I could do that.

I'll try again. Hopefully it will go smoothly this time.

Although I still believe they should update the documentation since they updated this node. I spent almost 3 days trying to figure this out before asking here.

Thank you again.

Yeah that did it. That was the source of my problems.

Just confirming in case anyone else has the same issue.

For those still struggling with trying to follow the tutorial and seeing different parameters in the REFERENCE node:

you could revert to the old v1 REFERENCE node like mentioned above
OR
you can use the current REFERENCE node by

1. Checking the 'Multi-input' checkbox. You'll see more options open up.
2. Now type in the Primitive Path: /Barrel/materials

that should give you the same effect as the tutorial.
