Translucent material does not diffuse sunlight properly

I have some white cloth curtains that will be blowing in the wind. When the sim starts, the curtains are just hanging down, and I can see the sun on the desk even though the curtains are covering the windows. The sun should be diffused a lot and not hard light until the curtains start to blow and rise and then we see the sun shining through.

When I turn off transmission in the cloth material, it blocks the sun, but I don't want this either. Checking on or off "thin walled" on the cloth material makes no difference in the shadows here.

I noticed when I use subsurface instead of transmission, the sun looks correct on the table (diffused and soft), but the curtains don't look good like they do with transmission.(see screenshot

How do I get the light to be correct on the table AND get the curtains to look right?

It might be possible to render the correct curtains separately and add them to the composition.

Thanks! That’s what I tried and it works.
