Procedural Bridge & Pier
Sep 11, 2026
An advanced procedural tools engineering project designed to eliminate geometry layout bottlenecks across large-scale game environments. The system acts as a native tool wrapper inside Unreal Engine 5, enabling environment teams to rapidly generate multi-tier bridges, elevated pathways, and coastal piers.
Core Engineering Features
- Data-Driven Architecture: Engineered the core procedural asset generation logic to interpret external Python/Engine Datatables, allowing artists to instantly swap modular structural kits (columns, railings, spans) while retaining localized placement curves.
- Dynamic Adaptive Columns: Developed an automated raycasting/terrain-conformance system inside the HDA logic that dynamically projects, scales, and aligns supporting pillar sub-assemblies to underlying landscape contours.
- Node-Based Spline Evaluation: Utilizes localized VEX math constraints to cleanly deform structural mesh components along complex artist-drawn splines, ensuring clean mesh normals and seamless mesh tiling.
- Artist-Facing UX Parameterization: Wrapped core parameters into a clean Editor Utility panel inside the active UE5 viewport, giving level designers instant access to controls for pier spacing, roadway curvature, and structural decay factors.
Production & Performance Optimization
- Batching Compliance: System outputs engine-native Instanced Static Meshes (ISMs) dynamically mapped to the landscape's local grid space, preventing draw-call inflation along extended spans.
- Automated Bounds Calculation: Built-in validation limits structural generation length, ensuring modular instances scale efficiently without triggering memory footprint exceptions across level streaming grid lines.
