Character Creation in Houdini  

Join Roy Kristoffersen, Lead 3D Artist at Qvisten Animation XTND, as he takes you into Houdini’s powerful character tools, KineFX. Learn how to create a character from scratch using Houdini’s procedural workflows and sculpting techniques. You’ll explore the full process—from initial concept to a fully finished model—rigged with APEX, and Unreal's Control Rig - Ready to be animated anywhere.

 


Roy Kristoffersen is the Lead 3D Artist at Qvisten Animation XTND. A 3D generalist with 20 years of experience in Maya, he has a deep passion for character modeling, rigging, and animation. Over the past three years, he has been exploring Houdini’s powerful procedural tools to enhance character creation.

Paddington in Peru FX Simulations  

Framestore FX Supervisor Igor Jovanovic shares how SideFX tool Houdini was utilised in the latest Paddington film. Igor will explore the applications of Houdini to create different simulations, including the treacherous river rapids that spell trouble for Paddington and the Brown family.

 


Igor Jovanovic is an experienced FX Technical Director who began his visual effects career at MPC where he honed his craft on titles such as Total Recall and Guardians of the Galaxy. At Framestore, Igor has supervised FX simulations for comic book smash hit Spider-Man: No Way Home, as well as other action-packed projects. Most recently, he lent his talents to Paddington in Peru.

MOTU MANU, brought to life with Houdini  

When a young bird’s antics unleash evil spirits into her world, she and her flightless friends set off on a nighttime adventure, racing against the sunrise that threatens to merge the spirits with the physical world, permanently devastating her beloved home. How we developed an animated film using Houdini.

 


Garrick Rawlingson is an outgoing business development specialist who excels in strategic partnerships and client relations. With a background in character and creature animation for blockbuster films like Hunger Games and The Hobbit 3, he brings a creative eye honed from working at leading VFX studios worldwide. 




Georgia Wales is the amazing creator behind "Motu Manu", with a background in storytelling and storyboarding, she has a keen artistic eye and a heart warming stories.

Sneak Peek | Character Animation in Houdini 21  

An early look into some of the tools, features and workflows for Character Animation in the upcoming Houdini 21 release. From additions to ragdoll and constraints, to new features such as the animation catalogue and the motion mixer, Houdini 21 will not only let you create amazing animation, but will be faster and more productive as you do.

 


Warren Leathem is a Senior Animator on the character team at SideFX. Prior to joining SideFX in 2021, he spent over 20 years as an Animator, Animation Lead and Animation Supervisor in the film and TV industry, focused almost entirely on character animation. Having worked at studios such as MPC, Weta Digital, and Animal Logic, he brings that experience to focus not only on animators doing amazing work, but also on how animation fits into the overall production environment and workflows.



Cristin Barghiel is the VP of Product Development at SideFX where he has worked for over 30 years. He started as one of the original architects and developers of Houdini. Currently, Cristin is in charge of the product direction, which involves working with customers and industry partners to increase productivity through innovation. Still very much a software guy at heart, Cristin works with a great team of SideFX developers, TD's and artists to make all of this happen.

Zombie Moose on the Loose  

Alps Studios in collaboration with SideFX will be delivering a hands on workshop for the Loose Moose project, developed to showcase the the capabilities of Houdini, focusing in particular on:

  • Rigging and animation using KineFX 
  • Environment / terrain / foliage 
  • RBD cliff fracture & FLIP interactions

 


Roberto Manca is the Lead Lighting Artist at Alps Studios, a boutique VFX studio located in Turin, in the north of Italy. Roberto joined Alps Studios at the start of 2022 as a new graduate, after obtaining a Bachelor's Degree, Cinema and Media Engineering from the renowned Politecnico di Torino, as well as a Master in CG and VFX from Event Horizon School, a private post-graduate program in Turin. Roberto started his career at Alps Studios as a 3D generalist and quickly stood out as a techincally skilled artist and dedicated team member. Within just a few years he worked his way up to Lead Lighting artist, overseeing a team of 5 artists on feature and episodic projects. 


Filippo Robino is the founder and CEO of Alps Studios, a boutique VFX studio located in Turin, in the north of Italy. Since opening it's doors in 2019, Alps has worked on over 40 feature films and episodic TV shows, as well as several high quality commercials, game cinematics, documentaries and music videos for international clients. Filippo has been nominated for a David di Donatello Award for Best Visual Effects in 2023 for his work on Dampyr. Filippo got his start in VFX by studying Graphic & Virtual Design at the Polytechnic University of Turin. He then pursued a private master program at the Virtual Reality & Multimedia Park in Turin.

Animating with Houdini KineFX

A hands-on animation workshop exploring the fundamentals of Houdini’s KineFX system. Featuring characters from Motu Manu - a project in early development centered on New Zealand’s native birds. This session is perfect for animation newcomers and seasoned pros looking to take their first steps in Houdini.

Learn core principles of motion, including classic exercises like the bouncing ball and walk cycle. By the end of the workshop, you’ll walk away with the fundamentals in KineFX animation… and your very own animated Kiwi bird to show for it!
