Point cloud: Where does this web-like pattern come from?

I created a cloud of points with Points from Volume SOP on a built-in shader ball.

A mysterious web-like pattern emerges when I zoom in:



What's that? I thought Points from Volume SOP should put the points evenly (with "Grid" configuration)? Or is it some kind of Moiré pattern?

More of an optical illusion in Perspective view (not sure if it has a proper name ^^).

You can notice that points are evenly separated in Front/Top/Right Orthographic views.

It's a Moiree effect. I dipped my toe into a rabbit whole and it seems material scientists can exploit these patterns to detect faults in materials when under stress. Lot's of maths involved. Traditionally of course it's been a way to make colors with offset printing. Look up lattice moiree effects.

It looks similar to Kikuchi pattern.
