1. When something changes in the view pane, the network view either goes blank or does not update until I click on it. The same is true for network - view update.
2. Some simple operations like polybevel (default settings) of 15 edges takes 5 mins.
3. Significant lag when used with wacom tablet.
4. Random freezes when saving file.
5. Random crashes.

build 9.5.227
Mac OS X 10.5.4
2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, Memory 4GB, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB

At this point, I can't really use it

1. Known bug - we're working on a fix.
2. Can you send me a hip file? It's instantaneous for me.
3. I'll check it out - anything particular you're finding laggy when using a wacom? i.e. clicking on menu items, clicking and dragging, selecting? I have heard of wacom issues on other platforms as well. Just want to see if there's a pattern or anything specific that it's slow at.
4. I save files all the time and I've never hit this one. I'll check it out.
5. If you have any crash logs from these crashes, please send 'em my way.

Thanks!

Hey, I've got a bit to add to Chris's response.

1. This is my #1 priority right now. I just added a change to the next daily cut of 9.5 (will be 9.5.230) that helps with NVidia-based systems that are missing refreshes. The fix mainly targets text issues, but my also help with the Network view refreshes.

2. I'm puzzled by this. A few people have reported severe performance issues that we haven't been able to reproduce. There's a very easy way to capture what is going on.

- run /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app
- in the search field, type in “houdini” to filter out other apps
- do something in Houdini that is slow
- click on Sample Process button in tool bar of Activity Monitor
- save the results
- send them to us

We'd be VERY grateful if you could send us some sampling of what's happening so that we can figure out why some people are hitting this.

3. I've looked into the Wacom issue and believe I can take care of the lag. I'll have a look as soon as I've got a solution for #1

4. I've had another user report freezing of the save dialog today. Does this occur when you have the actual save dialog up?

5. You can look in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter for any houdini logs. We'd love to see them. Also, Houdini writes a crash to /tmp when it dies as well.

Any information you can send would be gratefully received!

will send my file+logs later today when I get home.
#3 happens when I use wacom and the mouse speed is set to a high value. Maybe 2 fractions higher than the midpoint between Slow and Fast. It mostly affects Cam mode when I try to pan.
Also almost any 2+ consecutive Command+Z freezes the application for a while.
speaking of crashes - I looked at the “Send To Apple” log yesterday and it had a whole bunch of bad memory access errors. I think they were all in 500.. area.
#4 For me, it happens on both Command+S or in Save and Quit dialog.

Thanks for working on Mac OS X version!

nothing in the logs.. what's the full path to the tmp directory? I know that Houdini logged something there when it crashed today after I tried to change the brightness of the GUI.

The tmp directory is hidden in the Finder. A way to get around that is to open up /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app and type in the command:

open /tmp

That will pop open a Finder window.

Looks like something went wrong with the nightly build. I'm fixing it now. Sorry to keep you waiting. I'll get it out ASAP.

Running OSX here as well.

Wondering where to get these nightly builds? Can I trash the present program or does the new build overwrite? Just wondering will there be complications about the license, using the free Houdini Apprentice

The most notable thing that has happened in my experience of OSX Houdini is that it takes forever to start up, bouncing in the dock for about a minute. Though once after I started the Houdini Escape by accident, Houdini (Apprentice) Master started really fast, just like any other program. It did this for about 3 or 4 times and then reverted to the slow bouncing in the dock startup.

You can download these builds from Support->Download from the above menu. Refer to the last two questions on this page [sidefx.com]

You can use the Houdini Uninstaller to remove older versions. The uninstaller will clean up other files that reside outside of the Houdini application bundles.

There should be no complications with licensing. The license file is not removed from your machine, so it will be available for future installation. Also, since you are using the free Apprentice license, these can be re-acquired if needed.

What type of machine do you have? Houdini should not take a minute to start up. Here's what you can do to help us fix it.

- run /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app
- in the search field, type in “houdini” to filter out other apps
- start up Houdini and get the icon bouncing
- click on Sample Process button in tool bar of Activity Monitor
- save the results
- send them to us

Maybe we'll be able to figure out why it's starting slowly for you.

Hey, working all day now with the daily build 9,5,230.
Did allot of keyframing.
Problem of 1sec delay refreshing when you change a paramater seems to be resolved.
GREAT

Hi Mike,

I am using an 8 core Mac Pro, last January edition, it is the base model with 4GB ram. Also the video card is the base model, but am not having any issues with this. (Only doing dynamics at present, hard body, and maybe particles and fluids later.)

Will try using a tablet tomorrow if I can get the newer build installed successfully within a reasonable time frame.

I timed the Houdini startup with nothing but Activity Monitor running at 65 seconds.
Attached is the “Sample Process” text which came out while A. Monitor was saying application is refusing to respond (for the greater part of the 65 secs). Hope this is some use.

That's a strange set of samples. What is going on is that Houdini's licensing code is asking OS X for the name of the computer. The entire set of samples is Houdini waiting for the answer.

Is there something strange in your networking configuration? As a test, you could try unplugging the network cable and turning off your wireless and seeing if that makes a difference.

The key has got to be something related to your networking setup…

That is very strange…I'll do some Googling and see if anyone else has hit this…

Yes, that was it!

I unplugged the dsl cable and Houdini started up in 5 or 6 seconds.

Don't know what it could be in the network, there is just 4 macs on it, but some may have the same user name (?). Don't have any virus software and keep this main machine for only a few programs, all
3D stuff, not even Adobe programs are on it.

The telephone company has the internet connection heavily firewalled down the line, so maybe this has something to do with it.

Hi, I did a bit of Googling. Apparently if there is problems with your DNS (name server), it can cause apps to freeze at launch (Mail is also susceptible).

So, make sure that your DNS settings are good.

Usernames should not be a problem. Just make sure that all of the Macs have unique names.
