After a long time not contributing to the Houdini community, for Nodevember I've been starting my favorite 3D application again. Not very happy how it turned out (flickering too much :-( ), but next topic is calling….
Here's my forest growing into a shape and growing berries on the shape boundary.
Video and the source file in the attachments, in case someone wants to play with it…

Sorry. I haven't noticed this. I still thought, that apprentice users should post to the forum instead of addressing support directly. This must have changed sometime.
Technical Discussion » python25.lib missing in windows distribution

Hi!
Today I noticed, that the windows distribution of Houdini is missing python25.lib, which is needed in order to link python extension modules. Since the python headers are included in the package, I expected to find the link library in there, too. The Linux distribution is shipping libpython2.5.a, so building Houdini conform python extensions works perfectly on this platform.
Thanks
Frank
P.S.: I also noticed, that in the directory $H/python/bin there are debug builds of the MSVC runtime libraries located. This seems to be an error.

Diggin up this thread, just to head you over to od (http://forums.odforce.net/index.php?showtopic=8888 [forums.odforce.net]). There I posted the first release of a spacemouse plugin for Houdini. Looking forward to hearing your opinions.

Well, you're lucky. Two days ago I posted the first preview of my spacemouse plugin on odforce (http://forums.odforce.net/index.php?showtopic=8888 [forums.odforce.net]). It's still a bit tricky to install and currently only works with the Windows version. I'd be happy if you post your experience with it.

Thanks for the info. I searched the forum, but didn't find anything. I should have known, that something obvious as this can't be unnoticed ;-)

Sometimes it happens, that Houdini hides an input field of a float vector3 attribute. I can't reproduce this constantly, but every one and then it happens. Most often it happens, when I was editing something in the attribute shown before the affected one, then tabbing to accept the input. Often I forget to move the focus out of the now focused input field. Maybe cause H8's input fields didn't have that strong focus and didn't react, when pressing a key over another pane (but my mind could cheat me on this). When pressing the space-bar over the viewer-pane to tumble the camera i now modify the focused attribute unintentionally. See example image 1.
That way I created a new channel, that can't be evaluated. I remove it by left-clicking with Ctrl on the input-field. Houdini now puts the attribute widget into expression mode and stretches the first input field over the complete width (see image 2). When clicking onto the label to leave the expression mode, Houdini sometimes doesn't restore the 3 line edits. Tabbing to the second component of the attribute results in image 3, leaving the edit field by clicking on another widget then results in image 4. What's interesting is, that when focusing the missing widget (through tabbing to it), it still reacts to keyboard input.
I'm working Houdini Apprentice 9.1.179, Linux i686 gcc4.1 on Kubuntu 7.10 (32bit). My computer is a laptop with a GeForce 6800Go using the regular nvidia driver (version 100.14.19).

I'm sorry, but Houdini won't run on linux on a G4. Take a look at the following thread: http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=172&page=viewtopic&t=5333&highlight=ubuntu+mac [sidefx.com]
Down at the page the discussion is about linux on a mac G5, but the same applies to the G4.

Why don't you replace your normals with your old ones before you copy to your modified mesh? Simply add a point SOP and wire the deformed mesh into the first input and the old one into the second one. Then set normals to $NX2 $NY2 $NZ2.

With Suse I always had to create the directory /etc/rc.d/init.d by hand before installing houdini. Otherwise, I had to start sesinetd by hand. This was with Suse 9.1 or 8.x, I don't know, if this still is necessary with OpenSuse. Just an idea…

I'm sorry to tell you, that Houdini won't run on the Apple G5 (even if you are using linux instead of OS X). I think everyone here (at least me) thought that you are using an intel machine. It's a pitty, that I'm assuming these things, when I hear someone is using linux.
Unfortunately Linux on the Mac can not be considered the same as Linux on the X86. You can't even consider different versions of Linux on the same processor the same (which is the reason, why there are so many differen Houdini versions for Linux). The type of compatibility (e.g. for the different ubuntu systems on Mac and Intel) is the source-code level. This is fine, if you are using open source programs. There you can compile your own version of the program. The binary (assembly) code of the same program will be totally different for the Mac-Linux and the Intel-Linux.
If you now wonder, why the installer worked then, there is a simple explanation: The istaller ist not a binary program, but a simple shell script. Shell scripts are composed of text and do not rely on a specific processor, since they will be interpreted by the shell.

“su” doesn't work on Ubuntu. An ubuntu system doesn't have a root account. Try “sudo bash” instead :-)
Ok, cd-ing to a directory is pretty easy. If you open a terminal, you are normally located in your home directory (/home/<username> or shortly called ~). The current directory is printed at the beginning of the command line. If it should happen, that you don't know in which direcory you are, type “pwd”, which stands for Print Working Directory. To go into a subdirectory (e.g. called bla) of the current directory type “cd bla”. Now you should see a change in the command line prompt. To go back to the directory one level higher you type “cd ..” The two dots have the special meaning of the parent directory (btw. one dot stands for the current directory). Sometimes one can't remember exactly how a subdirectory is called, in which case you can print the content of a directory with “ls”.

I've Houdini running on Ubuntu. The way you've tried the installation is not the way to go.
The most important difference of Ubuntu to other distributions is, that you don't have a root account. Things that are done by root in other distributions are done in Ubuntu using sudo and by the normal user (who needs to be in the admin group). There is a trick to get a root shell by calling ‘sudo bash’ on the terminal (or Konsole, if you're using kde). You will be asked to enter a password. This is the password of your user. After you typed the password correctly, you have a “root shell”. Now go to the directory, where the extracted files are placed and call ‘./houdini.install’. Make sure, that you exit the root shell again after installation. Don't start and work with Houdini as root.

Technical Discussion » Bug: Center of CaptureRegion SOP

Hi!
There is a peculiarity of the CaptureRegion SOP, that I was occupied with for some hours now. If you set the center of a capture region to (x,y,z), the real center point is located at (x,y, -z). The z-axis is negated. I don't know if this is intended, but if it is, it should be documented in the help.
I'm using Houdini 8.0.411 on Linux.
Cheers
Frank

Hi Mark!
You can get the houdini help working with ubuntu, but you need to install the tcsh package, which is turned off by default. It took me a while to figure this out, but now Houdini works really well with ubuntu.

Hi Simon!
That's interresting, because I have a dual-proc-system, too. But my two processors seem to be ok. Well, it doesn't matter, because I will give this computer away.

I have the same problem here. Using Windows Houdini is crashing constantly. With Linux everything is fine. I'm running a GeforceFX 5600, too. Before I had a Geforce 2GT, which didn't have the problems. Perhaps the troublemaker is the GeforceFX. I noticed, that Houdini is often crashing when opening a new window (e.g. rendering, or opening the textport). But switching the desktop (e.g from Build to Animate) is also risky.
What's also interesting is, that this only happend with Houdini > 6.0. H5.5 is running fine with Windows on my system.
