Technical Discussion » Paint / Click add one point at a time?

If you just want to create points on a world ortho plane or construction plane, then a polygon 'Curve SOP' followed by an 'Add SOP' set to 'delete geometry but keep the points' is another simple option.

It's optimistic I know, but what I'd really like to see in this thread is some response from Sidefx themselves, with particular reference to the issues Eikonoklastes raises above.

The other thing to note: "COPs v2" is known to be under development. I wouldn't expect to see anything until late '24 or even '25 - but it is being worked on.

If you want to try it, here is a copy of the Houdini config in which I have edited out those 'Inactive display' parameters. It works for me - and I'm using Redshift.

The Jedi master reminds us: the price of power is complexity : )
Fraser Shiers from Hipflask has a series of videos on NURBS parameterisation on his paid courses, but here are a few freee videos from him talking about NURBS curve parameterization that might be helpful:

Sidefx really need to employ - and empower - some dedicated, knowledgeable and experienced interface (UI / UX) designer(s).

I really hope some staff from Sidefx come across this thread, if only to emphasise that there are people who do model in Houdini - and who want to model in Houdini!

If you want a deep and thorough understanding of the geometry essentials I'd also recommend https://www.hipflask.how/ [www.hipflask.how]
There are some fundamentals you'll want to understand - for example: Houdini defines points, vertices and primitives in a different way to most other DCC's.

Thanks kodra - got it. Using a remeshed box I can see what's happening. The docs could really do with a few more hints, tips and practical points to note...

Am I misunderstanding the 'Measure thickness' SOP ?
As a test I have:
a box measuring 1, 0.1, 1 with axis divisions 3, 2, 3.
I'd like to measure the thickness of that box, so I'm expecting to return a value of: 0.1 for the central points.
The 'measure thickness' SOP in default mode returns: 0.0134...
What I'm I doing wrong?

I'm so thankful for Alexey's modeller - Polypen is worth the price of admission alone!
I find the 'no one models in Houdini' notion very frustrating because it can become a self fulfilling prophecy - ie: 'It's not worth Sidefx developing the tools, because 'no one models in Houdini''. The truth is that Houdini has some very powerful modelling tools and with a more positive outlook more people would use them. It's the implementation and UI/UX that needs refining.

Just in case you're not aware of it:
Not a library as such, but arguably the best 'learning vex' resource - with many, many practical examples:

I hope I'm wrong, but it feels like SideFX is occupied by Architecture Astronauts . There is just no obvious reason why APEX is designed as it is...
I agree. The seemingly 'architecture astronaut' driven agenda causes me some anxiety as a Houdini user. I have practical, everyday tasks to complete. I haven't yet had a client who said: "Wow! it's brilliant that you used [insert your architecture here]". It's more often: "Is the animation done yet?".

I've been considering the same question as the OP over the last few days. For me Karma XPU + Mtlx isn't quite there yet - the limitations with material mixing (two materials only), the limited set of prebuilt noise patterns, the need for overly fragmented shading networks - multiple nodes where Rs requires one, no OSL - and some missing functionality in the ubershader. I'll be sticking with Redshift for a while.

Technical Discussion » Curve Polygon, cant smooth a point?
- Mike_A
- 186 posts

You've drawn a polygon curve, so you can't expect Bezier controls on a point. Redraw it as a Bezier curve.
If you make your original curve a 'selectable template' and enable point snapping, you can easily draw a new Bezier curve by snapping to the points of the original. You'll then have the rounding and other Bezier controls available.
Alternatively: if you just want basic rounding, you could follow up your polygon curve with a polybevel SOP.

Tyler,
What's your opinion about running Redshift in the traditional OBJ>ROP workflow versus Redshift in Solaris. Which do you recommend?

Although this feature might seem trivial, sadly it requires a very large amount of work under the hood. So although we do have plans to address this, it won't be happening in the immediate term. The current design means we need to hard-code common combinations of BSDFs.
Just a +1 to say that this is a significant issue for me as well.
