EnivobI guess it is easier for them that you buy new Mac
Thanks for the info, I guess i was hoping for a Christmas miracle and I could use Houdini on my MacMini again.
I never understood how Software giants could have unresolved issues? I mean there are millions of dollars to solve the problem and tons of brain power. In my mind all you need is an if then else to fix the problem.
If the code is attempting to use an OpenGL function that is known to crash on Intel, don't perform that operation and instead use a non-crashing default. Aren't there software fall backs to hardware accelerated features that could reside in an ELSE condition?

It is becuse of OpenGL support in drivers. Intel does not have such good OpenGL support like nVidia and AMD. For 3d avoid intel cards. On top of that Apple OpenGL implementation is subpar compared to Linux and Win. My guess is that he uses Nvidia card, maybe GTX650.

Depend is from what pov you value it. If you value it from speed point comparing it with GPU renders, than yeah it is not worth it, but than that comparison is not fair either. I find it ‘normal’ speed for CPU Path Tracer. As I said I do not think that you can do anything to make it fast as Redshift, whatever you do. It is same as I would say well I do not think Redhift worth it as I can fit 32 GB scene in it … Also maybe some people did not try Redshift and do not know what is speed

Mantra can not be fast as Redshift, unless it gets GPU support, simple as that. Now there are many other things in production that are also important, it is not just about speed.

Ok..but say if a company is using DirectX for their game/s on windows. What do they typically use when setting up for Apple - OpenGI or something else?
Exactly and that is reason why there are not so much games for OSX as for PC. I guess Metal is Apple's DirectX wannabe?

SideFX already did a lot of rewriting to be able to support OpenGl implementation on OSX. Comparing with Adobe products is comparing apples and oranges, Adobe products are not using OpenGl features as much it is used in Houdini, not even close. Apple needs to support OpenGl platfrom better, there is no chance that SideFX or any other company develop build just for Apple platform and maintain it, that is dev nightmare and way too expensive.

… There was a few tricks we did to get rid of them, but in some cases we had to turn reflections off entirely to just get rid of them. (If anyone has tips on how to minimize fireflies please swing them!) …
I think that clamping should help you there, you could try with Color mapping around 2-4.

1. It can if you have some large simulations.
2. Gamer cards are just as good, some even better
Thing with laptops are that they overheat much more than desktop on CPU intensive tasks, for obvious reasons. So you need to take that into consideration also.

Not sure will this answer your question, but I was using Houdini Indie on GridMarkets, but with Mantra, not sure will that be possible with 3rd party renders.

That seems to me more like bad installation. What happens if you start Houdini with Terminal?

Using normal node is not wrong thing, it is great that you have it so low poly models could look right without you having to add more geometry.
Usually if you subd (add subdivision sop) model you do not need normal sop. But why would you subd your model if you do not need it.
Also normal sop is great if you want to export your model, so other app reads these normal same as H.

Did you import that geometry?
Obviously you have problems with normals. Remove cusp and try to add Normal SOP.
