Houdini Crashing to Desktop - Rendering

Hi all,

I'm having issues rendering images at 4k resolution and higher. 4k works on occasion. But more often than not, it starts, renders anywhere between 5-30mins and then crashes straight to desktop without warning. Images below 4K, render fine.

Using Redshift and rendering through the Redshift renderviewer. I've tried various versions of the plugin, as well as various Nvidia Studio drivers.

Currently using Houdini 19 but I was getting the same issue with 18.5.

System details:

Windows 10
AMD Threadripper 3990x
128gb RAM
Nvidia 3090
Corsair HX1200 PSU

Steps I've taken:

Monitored temps while rendering - CPU 50°c and GPU 75°c
Uninstalled all Realtek audio drivers
Changed TDR values in regedit (now at 240)
Used GPU memory limit set to 90%
Changed system power settings, disabling USB and HDD suspend and sleep settings

As always, working on a live project and deadline is fast approaching. Any help is much appreciated!

Cheers!

Could this be Core Performance Boost related? I don't know if newer AMD CPUs still suffer from this, but perhaps try disabling the feature in the BIOS if it's still applicable.

I've just checked and Performance Boost was already disabled. I've just updated my BIOS to see if that would help but the issue is still there.

Thanks for the suggestion though

Ah, that's a bummer. Maybe try running the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool, on the off-chance that you have a bad stick of RAM. Although I think you might have noticed instability elsewhere and not just rendering 4K in Redshift.

Ok, slight update. I've just managed to render out an 8K image.

I made the below changes to the scene:

1. Used a clay override material for the entire scene
2. Reduced the poly count to 10%
3. Used a ROP output to cache the geo and re-import
4. Changed the mip bias on certain 8k textures

Something worked and I'm guessing it's the poly reduction and material override.

I'll investigate further tomorrow

I'll give this a go regardless to check if there's any bottlenecking going on! Thanks again

Still getting the crashing straight to desktop. This time moving lights in the viewport with renderview running at 1024x1024/.

I've switched out the hi-poly geo to a Redshift proxy so I'm finding it hard to believe it's a VRAM issue.

Has anyone got any ideas what can be causing this?

What are some of the root causes that make Houdini crash to desktop? Redshift aside.

If you haven't already, you may want to log a bug for your crash so that the friendly folks at SideFX can check it out.

SOLVED: I believe I've solved my issue...

I think the issue was with the GPU not getting enough voltage. I've switched the slot it was in and changed out pigtail PCIE cables for singles and I've not had a crash since. Successfully rendering at 6k now.

So either a dodgy cable or faulty slot.
