Quick gdb hint: one easy way to get around needing to type -foreground is to do
set fork-follow-mode child
in gdb before starting Houdini.
However, that doesn't explain why you can't run houdini -foreground from gdb now. One thing I do notice is that you say -fullfile in your H9 example, and not -foreground; can you check your syntax?

Yes, Apprentice HD users get 9.1 licenses. To upgrade, you have to go to File > Install Licenses in the Houdini License Administrator, then log in with your email and the password you were emailed when you bought Apprentice HD.
