new books ? Aug. 29, 2009, 10:48 a.m.

While I still like traditional printed books, I agree with an earlier post that eBooks are the way to go. I especially like the RAW or rough cuts versions. This gives you a jump on things and you can still buy the hard copy at a reduced price or print out what you need as you go.

Indie License of Houdini? Aug. 28, 2009, 11:22 p.m.

A thought for Side Effects marketing folks!

I just found Houdini and downloaded the Apprentice version to check it out. I understand that there is a HD version of Houdini again for personal use.

I am interested in using Houdini for entry level commercial game development work which I know is not allowed even with the HD version (except with the Torque game engine). I am working with Unity myself (a torque competitor).

Is there any chance Side Effects might consider changing the Apprentice HD license to allow commercial work up to a certain revenue point? Even at an additional cost? This is what both Unity and Garage Games offer for the indie licenses of their game engines.

An other alternative might be a cheaper rental license …

Just as getting PLE/low dollar version helps grass root adoption of your product …offering an indie version might also foster more adoption of Houdini in the games development arena. Once your making some money it is a lot easier to move forward and purchase that full seat license.

Just a thought … thanks for listening
