Ooh, that skeleton algorithm sounds like it would be super useful. Is there a way to do this in Houdini currently?

This has more to do with the VRay proxy object or the alembic reader you're using than how you're exporting it.
Houdini supports writing out the arbitrary attributes, but I'm not sure the readers in max support remapping custom channels that way.
If there is a way, I haven't been able to find it.

Could you do it in python, but call the hscript requisite parts with hou.hscript() instead?
