In this 50min Houdini tutorial series, you will learn how to procedurally create a spider web from scratch that can adapt to any incoming geometry. We’ll use Houdini’s procedural power to design an organic and flexible setup that can be reused across different projects. The approach balances control and randomness, allowing you to generate webs that look both natural and visually striking.

The process begins with Voronoi operations to establish the initial framework of threads, while custom curves are introduced to create force lines, empty spaces, and intentional gaps in the design. As the tutorial progresses, we’ll add layers of detail by generating additional types of strands, enhancing the complexity of the web. Once the main structure is in place, everything is merged, fused, and smoothed, giving the web a clean yet organic appearance.

Finally, the web is brought to life with two layers of vellum simulations that simulate tension and natural irregularities. A proximity-based width attribute is also created, adding subtle variation to thread thickness for a more realistic and dynamic look. By the end of the series, you’ll have a complete procedural setup capable of producing beautiful and creepy spider webs ready for visual effects, motion graphics, or game environments.
