Hello Labsters!
It’s been a month since we launched our Public Roadmap and we’re really blown away by all the feedback we received. A big thank you to everyone who’s taken the time to submit feedback, upvote ideas, and help us prioritize.
Your input is actively shaping what we work on. Over the past month, we’ve added a few new Proposed items and moved several items from Proposed into In Progress.
If you haven’t checked it out yet, or if you have more ideas, please keep it coming.
Tool Updates
A few updates across Labs this month:
We’ve updated the pseudo-gravity system to use the analytical catenary solution (cosh function) instead of a quadratic approximation. This results in more physically accurate cable shapes, especially noticeable in longer spans and hanging structures.
Updated to work correctly in OpenGL viewports. Vulkan viewport support is still not available for this shader.
The QuadRemesher integration has been updated to version 1.4, bringing improvements in stability and remeshing quality.
Community Spotlight
Caden Loll created an anisotropic Kuwahara filter in Houdini’s Copernicus using OpenCL, producing some great stylized, painterly results (perfect for your cat pictures).
Node of the Month
Labs Distance From Border measures how far each point is from the nearest open edge, giving you a clean gradient from the border inward. It’s great for driving edge wear, falloffs, and procedural masks that follow the shape of your geometry.
Contact Us
We love seeing what you’re building with Labs and we’ll keep sharing our findings. If you’re working on something cool, please contact us and share it. The best way to reach out is through Discord. Our official SideFX server is public, and we’re there too.
See you next month — stay creative!
