Your vimeo link didn't seem to work and you probably should have posted that in this Work in Progress forum, so I've moved the post for ya.

The splintering and jagged edges look nice. Good use of motion blur for the flying shards. The large shattering effect feels out of proportion with its impact force, though.

A wooden palette dropped from a low height would probably just crack and skid around meekly. The dramatic camera angle also makes it look as if the wood explodes before touching the asphalt surface.
