This is a fantastic question!
As Ondrej said, create an attribute and feed that in to the Scatter SOP.
All the newer SOPs are designed to take input attributes to override behaviour instead of in-place expressions or one-off attribute reference fields on the SOP.
It is so easy to wrangle an attribute up-stream and then pass that in to the SOP in question to modify it's behaviour.
As always, look at the Node's documentation to see what “hooks” are available and how to name the incoming attributes to override that SOPs behaviour. Many times the name of the parameter will be the same as the attribute to override the behaviour of the parameter, but again the help is the first place to go to conform just what can be overridden.

There's at least one school like the old school!
