display problem with objects away from origin

Howdy!

I am working with Students using fairly large architectural models and we have been using 1m=1 Houdini unit. The problems is that elements near the origin point work well but elements far from the origin appear to deform and display incorrectly when panning around in the display port.

The file attached includes 3 identical boxes (default Houdini box tool).

If you zoom into box and box_object1 (loacted far away from the origin) you will notice the deformation. This is particularly bad if you move around that area of the scene. On the contrary, box_object2 is located near the origin and it displays correctly.

In small scenes this is not an issue but when the models are thousands of units large this is rather problematic. I Have tried this in H14, H15 and H16 and the issue persists.

Any idea as to why this is happening or how this could be fixed?

thank you in advance - perhaps this may be obvious to someone here.

Floating point is a logarithmic scale of precision. Try scaling everything down in Houdini.

Dear Artye,

Thank you for the note. I tried scaling things down and it does not change anything. It seems to only work if I re-position the elements closer to the 0,0,0 origin.
