Not sure about that - it either runs or it doesn't, I don't think that issue manifests itself as sporadic crashes. We have libstdc++.so.6, but also libstdc++.so.5 installed as a backwards-campatibility lib here and it runs fine. Of course, we can run either compilation of Houdini, but I'm quite certain if Houdini needs this library on your system at a certain version, if it's not there, Houdini just won't start.
I was under the impression FC3 ran just fine, it was FC4 that introduced some problems with Secure Linux being enabled, but you can work around it.
Our experience has been that the different flavours out there don't really introduce as many problems as everyone thought they would. Things like sporadic crashes tend to almost always boil down to(the inevitable) graphics drivers and kernel version. *sigh*
Cheers,
J.C.

I downloaded houdini 8.0.410. do i need to update my kernel?
Do you remember which file you downloaded?
There's 3 different ones for linux:
Linux x86_64 gcc3.4
Linux i686 gcc3.4
Linux i686 gcc3.2
I take it you are running a 32 bit system so the first file in this list would probably be no go for you.
