Unfortunately and apparently VC++2005 is too recent and only VC++2003 will work cause Houdini is compiled with this compiler.

To get started: last year, one of the guys at SESI Toronto did an Intro to the HDK. I thought the slides were available on the SESI website but they cant be found. People from Sidefx may have more info.
Otherwise, by having a look at the samples, it can help, but the HDK asks a lot of self-studying.
Time to get out of this messy world.

I'd start with the examples. Follow the install instructions on Odwiki then go to the toolkit directory in a commandline window and find a something you'd like to compile and type

hcustom foo.C

where foo.C is the name of the op you want to compile.

If that is success the op you compiled will show up in Houdini next time you start it up.

Next study all the help and look at all the examples, it's not easy as there is no hand holding tutorials, but feel free to post questions.
The trick is finding just the right hammer for every screw
