Dear Houdinis,

I've recently stumbled upon the following video by computer artist Glenn Marshall. A few of you guys might know this.

As he explained on his blog (see here [glennmarshall.wordpress.com]) he used Cinema 4D and his own python code to generate this beautiful artwork.

As I am more of a hobbyist and would like to explore Houdini more as a tool to explore visual art, I've been wondering if achieving something to a similar effect is also possible with Houdini? I haven't found much discussion of visual art with Houdini when I searched around the forums/the internet.

I'd like to add here that I'm fully aware that all the VFX-industry related things that happen with Houdini are absolutely artistic too. The differentiation for me comes with the fact that artwork like that of Glenn Marshall isn't really aimed at the VFX industry, but is more of a personal project. However, I do not mean to talk down on the creative process for more general VFX effects.

I'm thankful for all answers and tips.

Best,
Philipp

TL;DR: How suitable is Houdini for personal computer art projects (see above example)?

Houdini is capable of doing all of this.
Have a look through some of the Entagma tutorials to get an idea of how Houdini is used for things like this: https://vimeo.com/entagma [vimeo.com]

Hey Michael,

I haven't seen that my thread has been opened. I am sorry for the delay in answering, as I really appreciate your reply.
I have just finished Tayler Bay's “Houdini for the new artist” and will soon start diving deeper into Entagma's files. I feel like I should first of all get a better grip of the basics though. I am really intrigued by Entagma's tutorials though (and certainly will not be the only one) and it is a great source of inspiration.

Best,
Philipp
