Guide groom mirror question

Is there a way to "bake" mirrored groom operations? Here I drew guides with mirror X on, planted to fill them out, then did a little sculpting. Now I have a problem if I want to break symmetry during sculpting. Turning off mirror deletes the entire mirrored half. I thought maybe chaining another guide groom would work, but somehow it's still treating the incoming guides as mirrored. The only solution I found is saving the groom to disk then starting up fresh on it, which is annoying.
