make a box,
append attributecreate,
set the vaue to $PR,
the attribute will be all zeroes.

Works fine over here.
Make sure you set the “Class” to “Primitive”, as I don't think $PR is available for any other class (which kind'a makes sense actually).

yep thanks that works, with attributepromote (to points).
but so does just putting $PR into $CR via point sop,
so I was thinking it should be doable with attributecreate.

He's right, $PR does work in the point sop but not the attribCreate… I wish it was a bug, but for some reason I bet they think it's not…

“They” think it's an RFE.

submitted.

In the mean time use $PR when building a vertex attribute then use Attribute Promote to a point class.

Remember that using $PR in this way only “really” makes sense when you have unshared points. No silly cases in to support now. (The default box test certainly underlines this.)
