The creaseweight is a vertex attribute . You can use a crease SOP by selecting edges and then applying the crease SOP. So this brings about a question that none of the crease example show you .
I don't seem to be able to make a group of edges to pipe into a crease SOP nor do I seem to be able to make a group of vertex's to feed into the crease SOP. There seems to no other option than manually selecting edges to add to the crease SOP.what approach can I use ?

Currently there is no support for edge groups in Houdini. This is an existing RFE. That would allow you to proceduralise the process.
The only way to do this is to run a script that parses your primitive or point group and builds a proper string to reflect that selection in the Crease SOP's group filed. See the help for the possibilities.
