depth of field lens shape and other lens shaders?

Greetings!
Here's another quick question:
I was wondering if it was possible to determine a len shape(circular or hexagonal for exemple) for 3d depth of field that would act a bit like the depth of field added in cops; a depth of field that would act more like a real life camera?

And speaking of that, is it possible to use lens shader(if there are any…) that would render images with a fish eye look?

thanks very much!

I assume you're speaking of Mantra, yes?

Mantra only supports Radial and Box shapes (add the “Bokeh” rendering parameter ).

I've seen that some software products allow the user to provide an image for the bokeh shape (Indigo renderer, I believe) and I sometimes wish we could do this for Mantra. So as well as emulating hexagonal apertures and various lens responses, you could also do fun stuff like:

Perhaps you could submit an RFE for it?

Thanks for the answer Jason.
It's interesting! I've been doing some test and I was wondering if there were other option so it boosts the brighter colors that are out of focus. Right now, maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like it does blur in circular shape but doesn't care if one spot is brighter than another. Usually in real life, I have the impression if a bright spot is blurred, it's gonna come out much more than darker spots… Do you understand what I mean?

thanks!

The energy will get spread out, yeah. Check out this site: http://www.bokeh.de/en/index.html [bokeh.de]

Ya know, I tried to figure out what the bokeh effect of my own eyeball was by looking at a tiny point (the reflection of a light on a pin-head, actually!) and defocusing my eyes. The best I could see what a glitchy lop-sided asterisk, which I drew somewhere, in Photoshop. Now I want to render a DOF image with that control map distribution to see if it would somehow seem more natural to me. Because Mantra cannot do it yet, I'm looking for 2D plugin that'll allow me to use a control image… .

Hmm… Well if we start talking about 2D solutions, it opens the possibilities that's for sure.

Too bad Mantra doesn't allow this right in 3D. I really like the result the depth of field filters gives me in cops, but unfortunatly I always get some artifacts.

Here's a exemple:

There are lots of small artifacts on the objects edges when you scroll frame by frame…

(By the way this little video was done using a technique I got on odforce.net challenges forum..thank you for that! I also got other animation I did using the “sunburn” technique shown in the same forum.)
