Shading Quality
This parameter controls the quality of surface shading. Adjusting this parameter affects shading derivatives, which affects MIP map choices for example

Here's another test, where Karma is just a bit slower, but looks better overall.
The material settings are the same, as well as the light setup. The backgroundplate
seems not to work in Karma XPU, so I had to create a grid with an emission not affecting
indirect rays. The thin walled option together with SSS here works really well in Karma.
Redshift was at 38sec
Karma was at 47sec

Here's a comparison between a Redshift Render and a Karma Render, I tried to have both the same dif/refl/refr bounces and the same material, but the renders look a bit different. As if the Karma Render needed more refr bounces.
Redshift at 1m25s
Karma at 7m24s
First one is Redshift, second one Karma.

You're not the only one, I am also running render tests as we speak, and to be honest I am disappointed by render speed and interactivity. I have 2x4090/Amd 5950X and the render speed as well as the interactivity when dialing in numbers on the materials are not up to par with modern render engines. I guess Karma isn't meant for freelancers but more for bigger pipelines, where render speed doesn't count as much.
Houdini Lounge » H20 - Bubble Wrap Scene - 30min render and looks like crap

LukeP
I have an RTX3090.
I have downloaded the bubble wrap scene from content library. Switched viewport to Karma XPU. It took over 30 min to render. And the final result looks nothing like the realistic bubble wrap shown during the demo. I tried Karma CPU. Same stuff. The attached screenshot is from Karma CPU.
During the keynote demo the bubble wrap scene rendered almost instantly :-) Any ideas why this could be?
One important thing which should be changed right away by sidefx, is that when your render settings have a higher resolution then the actual render view, it will use the higher resolution as can be seen in your screenshot where it says 1920x1080. Pretty sure your render view window was smaller then 1920x1080. This goes both ways by the way, make your resolution in the render settings smaller than your window size and it will render the smaller resolution and blow it up to your render view window.

Here's an example comparison I did to test how fast the improved OpenCL SOP can be. To be honest I am a bit disappointed, as VEX is clearly the winner among those 3 different ways do displace a grid. Not sure if I did something wrong or inefficient. The OpenCL Code is very simple but shows how to bind incoming attributes and displace along Normals.
With VEX I get Draw Time around 30 FPS
OpenCL clocks in at 16 FPS
and last but not least SoftPeak at 27FPS

Thanks a lot Rob, that was it. I had an environment variable pointing towards a python 3.9 library package. Deleted that one, now no more errors.

I got this long error messages, when opening H20, can anybody shed some light on this?
Importing the numpy C-extensions failed. This error can happen for
many reasons, often due to issues with your setup or how NumPy was
installed.
We have compiled some common reasons and troubleshooting tips at:
https://numpy.org/devdocs/user/troubleshooting-importerror.html [numpy.org]
Please note and check the following:
* The Python version is: Python3.10 from "C:\Program Files\Side Effects Software\Houdini 20.0.506\bin\houdinifx.exe"
* The NumPy version is: "1.23.5"
and make sure that they are the versions you expect.
Please carefully study the documentation linked above for further help.

Here's maybe another way of tackling this, which is not using simulation at all but utilizing some noisy displacment and a path deformer.

The order of prims are changed when Vellum starts to solve. That's the reason why just copying the values over from Sops doesn't work. A custom prim index attribute could help identifying the correct pairs of constraint prims.

You could try increasing the mass of your cloth together with Velocity Damping on the Solver/Forces Tab could help counteract the spinning.
The easiest would be to just make some really soft pins with high mass value:

How about using Barycentric Coordinates (MtlX Term ray:hituv) and dividing by the distance to Cam (MtlX Term ray:hitdist) and then comparing against a thickness value?
Here's a setup where I am not 100% on the math, as I had to use some divide math where I don't think they're really needed. Nevertheless a shader only solution
